about

Roundabout was written originally as a rant about Brexit and its clogging effect on political, economic, social and cultural life in the UK. As a rant, it had a lot of words, and a driving bass and drum pattern smashing all the way through it. I sent the demo to the guys in Who Killed Nancy Johnson? towards the end of 2022, but it didn't ever get picked up. I liked it, but when I listened again with the idea of including it on Slaught, the feel was all wrong.

Still, in true remainer style, I couldn't quite drop it, so I took some of the elements - some of the shorter lines, mainly - and messed around with them. The drums went completely, the bass riff dwindled to a tiny little phrase on a guitar, and in came a load of synthesizers.

If you listen carefully - and with some imagination - you can feel the instruments moving around you. Each tone comes up on the right, moves across to the left, fades behind you, then reappears over your right shoulder. It's like you're stuck on a roundabout, with noises moving around you but nobody finding the exit...

For the same reason, the words and the arrangement repeat, are disjointed, always seem to go back to the start, never really move on or reach a conclusion.

So there you go. #ToryBritain #BrexitShambles

lyrics

We can't tell the left from the right
Pull down the shade and hope for the best

Painted signs
An easy ride
A following wind
We're lost inside

We're lost inside

Steered by a word
Shoot the moon
A satellite guide
A crack of doom
Painted signs
An easy ride
A following wind
We're lost inside

We're lost inside

Steered by a star
Shot the moon
A satellite tribe
Sinking soon
A slick man's scheme
A quick machine
Driven by fear
In low gear
A slick man's scheme
A quick machine
Driven by fear
In low gear

We're caught on a roundabout
Caught on a roundabout

But all of the lines were out
We can't tell the left from the right
